PSA Graded GEM MT 10 - 2018 Bowman Collectable Baseball Card #49 - Shohei Ohtani
Additional Information
  • Showcased here is a treasure worthy of being placed among all your definitive collectibles!

An unbelievable, young athlete/ballplayer arrived from Japan and his name is Shōhei Ohtani. The "modern-day Babe Ruth" has gained a lot of attention since he joined Major League Baseball in America. The hype surrounding this baseball player is arguably one of Japan's most promising young professionals!

Shōhei Ohtani (大谷 翔平 Ohtani Shōhei) is born, bred and molded in Japan measuring at 6' 4", 203 pounds, and a right-handed starting pitcher. He previously played for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of Nippon Professional Baseball's (NPB) Pacific League. Ohtani was the first pick of the Fighters in the 2012 draft. He has officially recorded the fastest pitch by a Japanese pitcher and in NPB history at 165 kilometers per hour (102.5 mph).

Major League Baseball teams usually select a player to be a pitcher or a batter. With Ohtani, because of his extraordinary ability to be an efficient elite all-rounder, can perform at-bat and pitch (two-wayer) is proving his fervor on American soil. His influence has the potential to change the way Japanese ballplayers are regarded in terms of their individual skill and the experience of different players they compete against before heading to MLB.

There's no overlooking the 3.31 ERA and 63 strikeouts that Ohtani racked up in his first 51.2 major league innings. The 100 mph fastballs and physics-defying splitters and sliders that he launched. Ohtani has played 10 games and has two wins on the mound and three homers at the plate. He’s struck out 18 in 13 innings and already recorded his first MLB double and triple and has 11 RBIs.

Ohtani was already famous when he was in high school. Before turning 18, he recorded the fastest pitch in the history of Japanese high school baseball at 160 kilometers an hour. Very few major league pitchers in America can throw that fast. Ohtani compiled a .981 OPS and slammed 30 homers in his final two seasons in Japan. Despite looking in over his head against major league pitching in spring training, he's carried that success over to the States to a remarkable degree!

    The Los Angeles Angels

On December 8, 2017, a mold-breaking player Shohei Ohtani agreed to join the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball in the U.S. He chose the team over the well-known New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

A tiny but explosive piece of baseball history was witnessed by hundreds during Ohtani's home debut at Angel Stadium; just two days after going six strong innings for his first Major League win -- hit his first Major League home run! He became the first Angels rookie to accomplish this feat.

With an overhand delivery, he throws a four-seam fastball averaging 97 miles per hour with a splitter, late diving action, forkball an occasional curveball, and a solid slider at 82–84 miles per hour. He posted a BB/9 (walks per nine innings rate) of 3.3 in his NPB career. Ohtani has been compared to Justin Verlander by some MLB scouts.

Fans in the U.S. have fallen under Ohtani’s charm, as curiosity has given way to fascination and a celebration of his techniques.

“He’s making American baseball fans and those who work in the sport reconsider what is possible, and there’s immense cultural and commercial power in that dynamic. He already has more fans across the country than many contemporary MLB stars.”

Act quickly! As this opportunity to possess a golden piece of baseball history is rarely available!

    Fun Facts ✨

Ohtani is only the third player in history to get two pitching wins and three home runs in the first 10 games for his team

Pitching his second game, he forced 12 strikeouts, equalling an American League record for a pitcher in one of his first two games

He is the only third player ever to hit a home run in three consecutive games and pitch a game with more than 10 strikeouts in the same season.

In his high school in northern Iwate prefecture, Ohtani threw the fastest pitch ever recorded by a Japanese high school pitcher, at 160 km/h (99 mph).

He had his fair share of record-setting in Japan, becoming in 2014 the first player to both remove 10 batters and record 10 or more home runs in a season. Nobody has broken that record.
